@ Staging Grounds, Rapid City, SD
"I think this film is a conscience awareness in division of our cultural seperation. We all have a story to tell of how we come from blindness to seeing. my hope is we all leave what we used to know and believe in the unknown."
-audience member written response to film On July 27, 2010 Gia Micheal's film Disinherited Earth was screened at Staging Grounds in Rapid City, SD. |
notes from the conversation following the screening
as Americans we
lack of cultural context
American perspective [is always] of
Israel Israel
if we could understand
we wouldn't be doing today [what we are doing]
"American" perspective very
narrow
people here in Middle Am.
will we ever understand
what we're seeing?
That makes perfect sense
The part outside/inside
"They believe in nothing"
reality check
fight for capitalism
+ money
when he said we don't
believe in anything is
that the light we're viewed
he's showing us that the
common people are
stuck in limbo they
have nothing All
religions but w/out a
State without a country
But yet they have
our dreams too-
he wants to be a cook
he never can cook
can you imagine that?
we think of Taco Johns as
beneath us
it's something so simple-
to me cooking food is an
everyday thing.
from that perspective
say you believe in
this religion this
philosophy you know
you know things
our country
if we're is doing something
+ causing destruction
wouldn't you want
to not do that?
if we're working our jobs
and paying into their
system + its going
into the melting
pot somewhere free in
the world causing
destruction would
I've been there, I'm
sorry. What we
won't do is more
bouyant than what
we
we won't lift a finger
they've lost faith
+ they're in the ground
of all faith
absoultely fabulous job
of pulling personal
dilema - the water
+ the fabric perfect

it was washed away
i'm nobody
the old guy key

walking down
street trying to sell
food lk @ all the
heritage that he had
everybody so busy doing
their thing
But that fabric the
remnants...
like that car going up
the hill
stuck in this place being
where they are everything
+ nothing
stuck btwn everything and
nothing
go to the reservation
exactly, that's
exactly what I was
thinking
the fabric
the cultural fabric is
being torn dilluted
shredded
bcause the power will
always be in the
hands of those who
have the $ + the
weapons.
this is the perfect
opportunity to get
it out to people
this should be put in
the schools
cultural anthropology
the car it scrambled
@ beginning/end shows
up more + then it
scrambled...it's
kind of ___ you don't
want to scare the
people but you want
them to be conscious
you don't want to cause
mayhem but you want
them to know the truth
the truth is frightening
But the truth sets us
free
they believe in nothing
But they have something
it's what it is it's theirs
that's their foundation,
their belief
when you tell a story
you tell it the way
you know it to the
next person
cultural disintegration
around us
they come from a land
that is
we have a land next to
us that is building, sacred
[Rapid City is neihbors with the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation]
if it's happening here what
do you think is happening
there?
Bombing/ belittled
how many cultures can come steal from

Treaty Act
There's a South Dakota
can't be bought
these Black Hills can't be bought
the simliarities are
quite simimlar their land

There are things people

even have-- + that
is part of the problem
they have no infrastructure
no education
terrorism springs from that.
that's why some of the
things we say create
a little chaos
the consciousness needs/
has to be reached
we don't want everybody
trying to get out of the
country. 1 of the btful
things about sovereignity
of country.

Ch 1
Loved the split screen - opening young/old climbing stairs. So many voices at once was distracting. Ch 2 singing-beautiful helped me focus on the images. loved the texture in the images Ch 3 The text was too long between lines...I have a short attention span! It was difficult to connect. :-) Ch 4 Ch 5 sometimes I'm feeling the text is a little too abstract & detracts from the visual story. interlude Powerful The man's story is very moving & helps me understand the unique Palestinian perspective. Ch 7 images like a japanese screen painting- beautiful. (who is "she" and "her?" Past culture? Interlude Great perspective from a non- revolutionary young man. (Mamoud) Ch 8 Now I'm focused on the heart of the film.... Palestinians in Syria & Lebanon. Ch 10 Audio was difficult to understand. Blur was annoying... The end was abrupt overall... liked the film very much. moving I would've liked to have been clued in a little earlier (Palestinians) but maybe I'm slow :-) Beautifully filmed! |
